Hi,
I hope everything is ok where you are.
Last week I briefly mentioned the 60 year anniversaty of the partition of India and Pakistan.
I say briefy, because I gave it 3 sentences.
Having watched a documentary about it during the week, I now know a bit more about it than I ever did, and the point I made last week seems worth making again in light of the details.
The British press is often quick to rubbish other countries' foreign policy, most noticeably the US, but the way the British acted in the 1940s is quite staggering when studied.
India was the crown in the British Empire - 350 million people, a mixture of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims all living together under the peaceful British rule.
Hmm...
Let's not forget that the British Empire was gained by force, and it was maintained by force.
It's true that the communities did live together, but that was mainly due to the fact that if they didn't the British would come and sort it out, with force again.
After the 2nd World War, the movement for Independence in India gathered pace, with some people wanting a united India, and some wanting a seperate nation for the musim population.
It's quite possible that the British would have just kept control, but the war had left us all but bankrupt, and it was clear that we just didn't have the money to maintain control - Britain was war ravaged, and in no position to start hiking up taxes to pay for it either.
That's probably why independence was accepted.
Once it became clear that Britain would be leaving, the question rose of how it would be handled, and the religious tensions started to surface, as people living in communities with a majority from an opposing religion started to consider life without the protection of the British army.
As the violence started, it became clear that it wasn't going to stop, and the decision was made to split India up to create Pakistan, a new state for the muslim population.
Instead of quelling the violence it had the opposite effect, as majority communities started to slaughter the minorities before the split.
The British couldn't keep control, and didn't seem to have the desire to, bringing troops home so as not to get involved.
This partition of a country of 350 million woud be a lengthy process you'd think, but in fact it was done in a few months!
A barrister was brought over from England who had never been to India before, and given a few weeks to draw the new border line.
A date was announced for the partition, which again fuelled more violence, and as Pakistan celebrated its' creation, the border hadn't been revealed!
There was no plan to deal with the refugee crisis, with millions being forced to flee for their ives, and simply start walking to other country.
Again because of the lack of British firepower left, these refugee trails themselves became targets for the sectarian violence.
Many hundreds of thousands of innocent people died.
So, wherever you are today, imagine that the community you live in is being divided in 2 months.
There will be a line drawn somewhere down the middle, but you're not told where.
If you're on the wrong side of this unknown line, you'd better be prepared to run, kill or be killed, because those who protect the peace now won't be around.
Your house may well burn, you may find yourself with nothing except the clothes you stand in - nothing left, and no-one to tell you where to go or what to do.
That seemingly unrealistic scenario was all too real for millions of people 60 years ago today - it's seemingly realistic for many of innocents in many parts of the world today too, so if this isn't the case for you, thank your lucky stars.
If you can do what you want, say what you want, go where you want, if you have food and water, make sure you appreciate the abundance, and when you feel like having a moan about things, ask yourself exactly how much more abundance do you need?
It's a point I feel quite strongly about, and I cover it in my book 'Transform Your Life in 21 Days!'
It's one of the simple but powerful changes of mindset which bring huge contentment and empowerment, and I'm proud of it.
Why not get a copy for yourself? It's only $7!

Ok, that's it for this week, and I'll leave you to consider the huge devastations some people go through.
'Til Next Time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 428 - Elvis Spotted On Space Station?
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
Last week I mentioned that Barbara Morgan would be going into space on the shuttle, more than 20 years after she commited to that goal.
As I type she's up there now, working away on the Space Station, and just to add to the story, one of her crewmates is Tracey Caldwell, and she cites Morgan and Christa McAuliffe as her inspiration to be an astronaut!
A great lesson that if you feel inspired by someone, you *can* choose to do the same, and get the same results!
A couple of anniversaries this month the partition of India and Pakistan, and the death of Elvis.
Well I say the death of Elvis, because it's said he died 30 years ago, Aug 16th 1977.
I was 11 at the time and can remember the hoopla about it.
One of my favourite song titles is 'There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis.'
I say one of, because how can that compare to another favourite, 'She Got The Goldmine, I Got The Shaft'?
Elvis changed the music industry and made a huge cultural impact.
He didn't do it deliberately either, he just followed his feelings.
He used to get into a lot of trouble before he ever made a record, with his long hair, and eyeliner!
He just went with what felt right for him - it just happened to lead to worldwide superstardom and an eternal place in history.
It also led to a drug-addled premature death at 42, so following your passions always needs to be done like anything else, with the ability to keep a rational view about things!
Go back a further 30 years to August 1947, and 200 years of British rule came to an end in India, with the partition of the country to form the new state of Pakistan.
The partition was made along, you guessed it, religious lines, and led to huge rioting and chaos, over 500,000 people died.
60 years later, and the relationship between India and Pakistan is tense at best, with nuclear ingredients making it a cause to concern all of us.
I live in a peaceful country, I have done all my life.
I've never known war or oppression.
I hope you haven't either, and as you read this, give thanks for that - appreciate the abundance you enjoy by accident of birth.
Next time you think you can't do things, or that you are 'trapped', that you don't have opportunity, think of people who *are* oppressed or live their life in war conditions.
Remember Elvis, and be brave to follow your passions like he did.
Be inspired by astronaut Tracey Caldwell, who was herself inspired by her crew mate Barbara Morgan.
Ok, thats it for today - where does your personal inspiration come from?
'Til Next Time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 427 - How Many Years Would You Give To A Goal?
Hi,
I hope everything is ok where you are.
I had already decided what this issue would be about, when something popped through my letterbox which tied in nicely, so here goes...
You'll remember, (and my legs certainly do!) that to mark hitting 40 I set the goal of training and running my first marathon, aiming at the London race.
The places are decided by ballot, and I missed out, so decided to just do a marathon on the same time and date by myself around my local streets.
I finished with a time of 5 hour 45, which is no firework worthy time, but a good achievement I am proud of.
This weekend I got the entry form in the post for the 2008 race!
I've decided to send it off - who knows, I might get in this year.
To be honest I'm not fussed if I never run another marathon, it's a sodding long way, but the opportunity to apply is there, and maybe my original goal will transpire a year later than I thought.
By the way I also found out that 2008 is the centenary of the modern marathon.
I knew that at the London Olympics in 1908 the distance of 26 miles was extended so the finish was in front of the Royal Box, but I also found out the start was extended so the Royal children could watch it it Windsor Castle!
Of course in those days the British Empire covered probably 25% of the planet.
Not any more...
This week also sees the delayed achievement of a goal, but this time the dealy is over 20 years!
The Space Shuttle Endeavour is set for launch on Wednesday, and one of the crew is Barbara Morgan.
I've mentoned Eileen Collins in space, I've mentioned Suni Williams in space, and this time it's Barbara.
She was the standby for the teacher-in-space program, which saw Christa McAuliffe and the rest of the Challenger crew perish a few seconds after launch.
Obviously that set the shuttle program back years, as did the Columbia accident, and Morgan has been waiting for her space flight for 20 years.
Certainly if you're going to give 20 years to a goal, it has to be a way of life, and Morgan's been a NASA employee for that time, with the associated life changes that brought.
Sometimes goals do take longer than planned, in fact they *often* do.
It's how you react when the timescale changes which dictates whether your goal will happen or not, patience and acceptance are essential parts of the formula.
Ok, that's it for today, watch out for Endeavour's launch, see Barbara Morgan achieve a goal after 20 years, and consider if you're really giving your goals enough time before you give up?
'Til Next Time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 426 - Jane Austen - Self Improvement Guru?
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
I'll start this issue with a quick note that my book 'Transform Your Life In 21 Days!' is now priced at just $7.
I haven't used the $7 script you see everywhere, but I chose to follow that price point.
I was thrilled to have it described as 'motivational magic' and 'a true gem', by readers, so if you fancy taking a peek, $7 is not going to break your bank balance now is it!:
http://www.transformyourlifenow.com/
Ok, I'm calling today's issue 'Jane Austen - Self Improvement Guru?'
Jane Austen, English author who lived over the junction of the 18th/19th centuries.
She wrote about English society around the turn of the, er, 18th/19th centuries.
Her books were filled with lots of lost love, dutiful requirements of men but more so the women, lots of forelorn gazes into the rain.
No, we're not talking about my own love life here, blimey if it's comedy you want I suggest Laurel & Hardy...
Pride & Prejudice is probably her best known novel, and it sums up her style - people's natural personalities and desires being crushed but not extinguished by the accepted responsibilities of the day.
The fact that the personalities are not totally dead is crucial, as they come to the fore at the end, and self expression triumphs into happiness.
You can probably see where I'm going with this...
I saw a great dramatization of her book 'Persuasion' recently.
It was done very nicely, with some modern tv touches thrown in, but not too many, just to add a reality feel here and there.
In fact a lot of these types of books are being worked on tv with a totally modern surrounding, and they work even better to put across the message that it's best to follow your passions, express you true self, and you'll be happy.
You don't suddenly achieve a goal of being happy, it's not a finish line you cross, its a state of mind a lifestyle.
It seems ludicrous that so many people choose to stifle it, often based on no more than what other people tell them - usually other people who are only too happy to express *themselves*!
Yes, be aware of responsibilities, but do not neglect the responsibilities you have to yourself!
The acceptance of happiness being unattainable was perhaps more understandable in Jane Austen's time, but we're 200 years further down the road!
Jane Austen died at 41, the same age as I am as I write this.
She wasn't universally popular - Charlotte Bronte said Austen failed to write about passion. I can't agree with that, I think passion is exactly what she does write about!
Mark Twain said that any library was a good library if it didn't have a Jane Austen in it, even if it had no other books!
That's harsh, wrong in my view, and not one of your finer quotes Twainy.
I think a good library *should* have a Jane Austen in it, maybe even under the 'self improvement' section?
Ok, that's it for today, don't forget to look at my book, now priced at just $7, and I'll leave you with this thought - does Jane Austen get your self improvement juices flowing?
'Til Next Time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 425 - The Inspirational Annals Of Sport (Thank God for spellcheck)
Hi,
I hope everything is well where you are.
I know I normally start my newsletter with that line, but with England facing huge flooding with a months rain falling in hours, I do hope all is well, and if it is, spare a thought for those less lucky, and appreciate the abundance.
Ok, lots of choices to write about today -
A lesson I learnt, or a lesson from 8 years ago, or a tv documentary about independant thought.
I think I'll just pile in and see where it goes...
Last week I mentioned my experiment about selling my article writing services, and about how I had badly underpriced myself, being swamped with badly paid work to deadline as a result.
Well as I studied the other offers in the same forum, I noticed a lot of people selling packs of articles they had written with PLR rights.
The prices worked out at a much better leverage of time, so I put my own up.
It's a good example of taking action, seeing the results, and then changing your method to work better.
It's a basic foundation of my ideas about success/self improvement and goal achievement, and as ever, it works!
You can see the latest offer at:
http://www.warriorforum.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=169627
Ok, onto the lesson from 8 years ago.
You know I love my sport, and while Wimbledon provided lots of fodder, Serena, Maria, Marion (all women? just a coincidence I assure you...),
the recent Open golf has done the same.
I wrote an article called 'Why Do Americans Hate The Open Golf Tournament?' which is getting some good viewing numbers!
The tournament was held at Carnoustie in Scotland, and it was last held there 8 years ago.
It's back to 1999 we go for a story that went down in the annals (thank god for spellcheck) of sport.
The Frenhman Jean Van Der Velde stood on the last hole with a healthy lead, and one hand firmly on the trophy.
His approach shot plopped into the little stream in front of the green, and after thinking about it for ages, he took off his shoes and socks, waded into the river and played his shot, which promptly plopped *back* into the stream.
His chance had gone, and The Open prize went to someone else.
Naturally this week he was asked endlessly about it, and the reporters kept questioning him about if it kept him awake, how did he get his life going again, etc, etc.
Well he hasn't been well lately, and he replied that when he went into hospital for tests, the other people he saw there kept things in perspective.
The reporters told him he must think about it every night.
'No' he simply replied.
They told him he must be full of regret.
He replied with French charm that, he had lived 41 years, didn't know how many he'd have left, maybe another 41, so was he about to spend it all wth regret?
He said if a glass was 50% full of red wine, he knew whether he'd consider if half full or half empty, especially seeing as he'd enjoyed drinking the first half!
Aah, how refreshing!
That's twice in a month that French sports players have inspired me with simple words.
It's easy to let the negative news output dim the lights, but it's also just as easy to plug into the light of others!
Ok, that's it for this week - my rambling led to thoughts of inspiration, no change there then.
The tv documentary about independent thought can wait, and I'll leave you with this question - which story do you use for inspiration this week?
'Til Next Time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 424 - Gordon Undervalues Himself Badly!
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
Over the last couple of weeks I've not been sleeping that well, but I think I've found a cure, and over the weekend I haven't got much sleep at all, up virtually all night, which does make you tired when the chance to grab a few winks appears.
And before you get too excited, it was nothing along *those* lines! (chance would be a fine thing).
No, I've been very busy.
I've been a busy bee.
In fact I've been busier than a bee.
I've been busier than a bee who's been too busy to do normal bee business.
Hmm, you get the idea...
I had a little experiment in mind, and as you know, experiments in my mind tend to be acted on, and this was no exception.
I do a lot of writing, what with this newsletter, articles and books, etc.
I enjoy it.
I also earn money from my writing, which I can tell you makes me enjoy it even more!
What I *haven't* ever done before is offer my writing skills as a service.
Well there has been a rash (ooh, good word), a rash of guides lately about how to get a quick injection of cash if you need one, and many of them talk about selling your writing skills.
There is an internet marketing forum which has a section specifically for people to make offers to each other, so I thought I'd have a go.
I made an offer for people to have me write a 300+ word article on anything they wanted, and get it back within 24 hours, for $9, with full rights to do what they want with it.
That's cheap, but a good place to start an experiment.
I then offered discounts, with 3 or more articles priced at $6 each.
I know from experience that I can write a solid article on any subject in 30 minutes, so was interested to see how the offer went.
I did have the advantage of being able to point prospects at other stuff I had written so they could see the type of thing they'd get, and the offer took off.
Since Saturday afternoon I have had orders for 63 articles!
All well and good, but even at my speed there was no way I could get those turned around in 24 hours.
I said so in the thread, and extended the lead time for new orders to 48 hours.
I have badly underpriced myself!
Had I known the response would be like that I would have pitched higher, but that's part of the learning process!
So since Saturday I have been typing away like a madman (some people would say I do *most* things like a madman!)
Lots of tea, with biscuits to dunk, eyes propped open with sticks, and all for just over minimum wage to produce work I can't even leverage for myself in the future!
Still, its been good fun, and I know now that these cash injection plans work, and that whatever twists and turns my life takes, I will never be starving in the gutter, simply down to the power of words - good eh!
I will NEVER offer my writing at this price again, but as the offer is still open, if you want me to write any 300+ artices for you, now's your chance.
They can be on any subject you want, either written as content, or with seo in mind.
You can then sell them, give them away, compile them into a report, use them as content, use them on your blog or autoresponder, the choice is entirely yours.
http://www.warriorforum.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=167864
Remember I'll only offer at this price on this occasion, I won't undersell myself twice!
Ok, I'll leave you with these thoughts - are you fully using the power of the internet, and do you know the full financial worth of what you can offer?
'Til Next Time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 423 - A French Serving Of Inspiration!
HI,
I hope everything is well where you are.
There were 3 big sporting events in Britain yesterday -
The Tour de France had a trip down near me in the South East.
It was also the men's singles final at Wimbledon, and the British Grand Prix took place too!
Plenty of fodder for me to write about you'd think, and you'd be right!
I'm not going to cover it all today, I wouldn't have room, but I *will* be using all those events to turn into income sources for me.
Note how I don't say 'might', or 'could', but *will*.
I'll be using the technique I reveal in my 'Make Money From Sport' book.
I know that's a blatant plug, but why not!
It's a book I wrote, not someone else, the technique is simple, and it works.
Throw in the fact that I priced it at $7, and I'm proud to mention it:
http://www.gordonbryan.com/sport
Ok, my decision about which sporting event to write about was made for me on Saturday evening by my friend Les Miserable.
I had gone to see him play at a pub, and the first thing he said to me was 'did you see her?'
I knew straight away who he was talking about, and Les knew I'd know!
I replied 'Marion Bartoli?' and Les nodded.
I think it was a nod, may have been wind.
Ooh, by the way, before I deal with Marion (I should be so lucky), I must just also mention that Les has done a version of my Rock & Roll Town song.
I hope it makes you smile as much as it did me, and you can hear it at:
http://www.gordonbryan.com/r&r/r&rsong.html
Click on the right hand side where it says '7 String Les'.
Ok, Marion Bartoli...
Wow, a great sporting story of goal achievement, with the huge added sparkle of enthusiasm and charm.
Marion comes from a small French village of 2,000 people, and was taught tennis by her father.
She has a most peculiar action, especially with her service, but from 18th seed she got all the way to the final, where she managed to give Venus Williams a good run for her money.
In her semi final, she had played badly in the first set against the world number 1 Justine Henin, mainly due to nerves, but then she saw her favourite actor Pierce Brosnan in the crowd and told herself she couldn't play that badly in front of him!
She then went on to play Henin off the court!
In the final she had a slow start again, but then got into the match with her never-say-die attitude.
When she had the trainer work on a foot blister, Venus Williams suddenly also needed medical treatment.
It's a tactic the Williams sisters have used for years, not very subtley either, and to see it once again from a mutli champion is unedifying (ooh, good word), to say the least.
Did Bartoli get flustered by the extra delay?
No, in fact when the crowd started a Mexican wave, Marion joined in from the middle of the court!
Here's one more point to bear in mind before summing up the obvious lessons - in her news conferences, when she was asked how surprised she was to be in the final, she said she *was* excited, yes, but not so surprised because after all, 'I AM a top 20 player!'
Ok, you don't have to play tennis to take inspiration from her.
She learnt her craft herself with her father, including unorthodox methods which would be scorned at by the establishment.
Is it still possible to go your own way and succeed in this day and age? Er, YES!!
She was confident in her abilities.
Although her charm can't necessarily be learnt, her enthusiasm can, and it's a vital ingredient for success.
She had the whole crowd rooting for her, and it's no surprise - take her attitude in life, and amazing things will happen for you.
Just to finish the subject, another nice touch was that she mentioned after the semi that it would be good if Pierce Brosnan could make the final.
As it happened he had a wedding to go to, but he sent her a bouquet of flowers and a letter before the final.
Ok, that's it for today, I'm off to write a bucket load more about sport to earn me money, but I'll leave you you with the thought of Marion Bartoli - as she serves up the inspiration, make sure you use it in your own life!
'Til Next Time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 422 - My New Book - 40+
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well, as we creep into the 2nd half of the year.
Did the 1st 6 months go as planned?
What do you have planned for the next 6?
For you Canadian readers, I hope you had a good Canada Day yesterday.
For you American readers, I hope you have a good Independence Day on Wednesday.
For everyone, Happy Regular Day!
(that also applies to Canadians and Americans!)
Right then, my new book is out today.
It's priced at $7, but it isn't about internet marketing.
It's about me.
I called it 'The Great Gordino's 40+ (The Golden Million)'
I couldn't decide between the 2 titles, and in the end I thought 'bugger it, it's my book, I'll use both!'
In my book 'Transform Your Life in 21 Days!' I focused on the theories and mindsets I have used, and continue to use.
The theories have worked for over 20 years, and will continue to do so, it's not a 'flavour of the month' thing.
In this new book, I concentrate on how I used the theories, the actual results I achieved.
It's a story - the story my life between about 18 and 40.
It also serves as a reminder of the fact that age is often used as an excuse for under-achievement, and I'm not about to let turning 41 stop me!
So, in the book I talk about another idea I have brewing, which may turn into my biggest adventure yet!
You can see more about it here:
http://www.gordonbryan.com/40+/
Since February 2003 I've written in this newsletter about self-improvement, goal achievement and wealth creation.
This new book '40+' is no different, so if that doesn't interest you, then it might not be for you.
If you *are*, and you enjoy my writing style, then $7 is all you'll need to read my story, the good bits and the bad bits!
A short newsletter this week, I can't deny I want to focus your attention on my new book.
I'm not usually an out-and-out plugger in the newsletter, so I'm allowing myself an indulgence this week.
I enjoyed writing the book, making me think long and hard about the last 20 years, and I think you'll enjoy reading it.
Did I mention that you can earn 100% affiliate commission if you promote it yourself?
Ok, that's it for today, pop over and have a look at the book, see if you fancy reading the story:

Issue 421 - Elastic Band Whiplash
Hi,
I hope everything is well where you are.
Well I've had a funny old week - sort of difficult to explain.
Almost, in fact, to the point where it's not worth the effort, but of course as you know I like to get things off my chest (waffle), so here we go.
Something nearly happened.
It didn't happen, I hadn't expected or planned it to happen, it was a surprise, and had it happened it could have taken my life in a whole new direction, quite possibly with permanent (good consequences).
As it happens, it didn't happen, because of circumstance which happened to exist outside my control.
There you go, bordering on the nonsensical, and probably triggering spam filters due to my overuse of the word 'happen'.
I would liken the experience to an elastic band...
Imagine that you have an elastic band stretched between 2 fingers.
Then you take one side of it with your other hand and pull it.
Then you let go, and the subsequent TWANG sends ripples into the other side of the band.
I have a sort of elastic band whiplash!
It just goes to show, as I say often, that you don't know what life will throw at you.
It might be a long way down the road, it may be just around the corner, but life *will* throw surprises at you.
It's another reason to enjoy what you have at the present, and to make sure that if there is something you want to do, then get on and do it!
You may go round the corner, and bump into one of life's surprises which means you are no longer *able* to do what you wanted, and you may look back with regret at the opportunities you have right now.
This week is the last full week of me being 40.
Next Monday I'm planning to launch my new project, which will just sneak in before I turn 41.
To lead up to that, I've been thinking about what I did at 40.
I trained for and ran my first marathon.
I didn't get into the London Marathon, so just ran on my own around the local streets at the same time as the London race.
My time of 5 hours 45 is no record buster, but I was chuffed to bits - let's face it, it's a long way!
You can download the book I wrote to accompany the training here:
http://www.gordonbryan.com/cat/mm.pdf
It's free until July 3rd, then that option will be taken down.
Another project I started, but haven't really pursued yet is called 'The Great Gordino's Tears of a Clown.'
It's a photo idea, with the theme being the outward face we put to society, and whether we are too guilty of putting a false face to *ourselves* too!
I'm trying to get more models to pose, it would work for old, young, men, women, good lookers and the pig ugly...
You can see the basic idea at:
http://www.gordonbryan.com/clown.html
Something else I did to mark my 40th was write a song.
I called it 'Rock & Roll Town', and it's a deliberately cheesy-written-by-numbers song, and my idea was that it would be fun if loads of bands from all over the world recorded their own version.
As with a lot of my ideas, not everyone thinks it's as good as I do!
It has taken nearly a year to get another band to record a version, and you can hear my original and version 2 at my site on myspace.
Just to show again that you don't know what's around the corner, I got an email this very morning, from a band I had never heard of, saying they had done a version too!
You can also hear their version at the site:
http://www.myspace.com/rocknrolltown
One final thing in this last week of my being 40 - I can't decide whether to reduce my 'Transform Your Life in 21 Days' book to $7.
I wrote that in 2003, since when it has sold for $27 here:
http://www.transformyourlifenow.com/
I probably *will* reduce the price to $7, but for this week only, until 3rd July, you as a reader can get it for $7 here:
http://www.gordonbryan.com/offer.html
Ok, that's it for this week, have you seen all the things I've done for my 40th?
'Til Next Time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

I wrote that in 2003, since when it has sold for $27 here:
http://www.transformyourlifenow.com/
I probably *will* reduce the price to $7, but for this week only, until 3rd July, you as a reader can get it for $7 here:
http://www.gordonbryan.com/offer.html
Ok, that's it for this week, have you seen all the things I've done for my 40th?
'Til Next Time,

Issue 420 - Are You A Cupboard Shutter?
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
Last week I talked about passion, a subject about which I'm, er, passionate.
So much so that this week instead of the Olympic subject I mentioned, I'm carrying on with the passion.
That always happens whenever I trail an upcoming issue!
Ok, last week I metioned a tv show called Britain's Got Talent, and featured an unassuming, low self-esteemed mobile phone salesman who launched into a goosebumpng opera performance.
As it turned out, he won the competition.
The show was undoubtedly geared to help him win, but at all times he was gracious and genuinely dumbstruck by what had happened to him.
His theme was 'I never though anything like this *could* happen to me'
He can now give full rein to his passion - good for him, and despite his admission that he very nearly didn't enter, he *did* enter, he took action.
At the weekend I went to a handfasting.
It's an ancient ceremony where two partners commit to each other for a year and a day, by the tying of their hands.
The expression 'tying the knot' comes from this old tradition.
After that time they either choose to go seperate ways, or make another commitment, usually longer.
It's not a legally recognised ceremony, but it was recognised by the couple, 2 friends of mine.
It was held in a big field around some ancient stones, and was a lovely thing to see, 2 people commiting to each other, sharing their passion with others, and it had a big feelgood factor.
I met a woman there who had a story that drew me in like an open day at the chocolate factory.
She's an artist, and decided at a juncture in her life to follow her passions, and now runs her own business creating and selling her art.
It's gorgeous work, and I'll be sharing it with you another time.
Last week I did a recording session with a music friend of mine, to help with his college course of music engineering.
It's what he wants to do, and he was whizzing his way around the equipment and incredible software as if it was as simple as ringing a bell.
That's a big learning curve he's been on, and what's his motivation?
(begins with a 'p', ends with 'assion')
A new TV series started tonight, about a woman who wakes up after 18 years in a coma to find she's now 35.
It was the first episode, and it's a thriller, so who knows where the storyline will go, but tonight's first episode focused on her trying to accept that she had lost 18 years, and all her friends and family left to think about what they had done over those 18 years.
If you are healthy as you read this, be grateful for that abundance, and look forward 18 years.
When you look back to today, 18th June 2007, what will you have done in those 18 years?
Will you have nourished your passions, or will you have shut them away in a cupboard?
I know which position I want to be in - how about you?
OK, that's it for today, lots of ideas about passions.
I'm thinking about changing the sales letter for my motivational book, so based on what I've just written about, I'm doing something I don't do that often, which is to out and out ask you to go and have a look, consider taking up the 100% money back guarantee and buy my book - you'll see a lot in it about passion, and just how to go about following it in real life.

Issue 419 - Do You Have Lurking Passions?
Hi,
I hope everything is ok where you are.
If I asked you to come up with 2 subjects that I could talk about for hours, sport and entertainment would no doubt be on the list.
In fact, they are both featured heavily in my new book, set for launch early July.
(If that whets your appetite, good, and if it doesn't, tough 'cos I've written most of it already!)
Ok, the sporting subject I was going to mention was prompted by last week's launch of the London 2012 Olympic Logo.
Much derision all round, but I will talk about that next week, as this week it's the entertainment subject that gets the nod.
A good while ago one of my online buddies sent me a video she thought I'd like.
She sends me lots of them, and they alwasy make me smile.
This one was from a show called 'America's Got Talent', where any type of act auditions in the show, it's a talent show in the style of Pop/American/Idol, with Simon Cowell included, but no retsraints on the type of act.
The show has finally made it over here, unsurprisingly called 'Britain's Got Talent'.
With my passion for goal achievement and entertainment, I was drawn like a pig to sh... er, like a fly to a flame.
Lets not forget, my Great Gordino act is a speciality act from the old school, and that whole area pushes me buttons.
The show here is screened over 9 straight days, not over weeks and weeks like the straight music talent trawls, so if you are in the UK, make sure you watch it.
Over the weekend there were acts I just have to mention.
The first was a bloke who stood at a microphone and pulled out a hand pupet of a monkey, and simply had the puppet mime to a Michael Jackson song.
A classic 'spesh' act, which he did so well that the audience were on their feet, they simply *had* to smile.
That's one of the keys of live entertainment to me, make the audience smile, so I was cheering him on.
The next act was a chap that sells mobile phones by day, but really wants to spend his time 'doing what he feels he was meant to do.'
It would be unfair to call him ugly, because I'm not exactly God's gift myself, so let's just say he wasn't God's gift either!
He was ungainly, and freely admitting he was not good at feeling confident with himself.
He walked on stage and quietly announced he would be singing "Nessun Dorma."
He stared uncomfortably into the spotlight, opened his mouth, and out came a magical tenor voice - strong and steady, but soft and smooth in the Andrea Boccelli style.
The audience was mesmerised - it was a real goose bump moment - superb.
The final act for me to mention was a 17 yr old male baton twirler.
He got into it because his grandmother had started a troupe.
He didn't want to tell his parents, and when he did they told him he shouldn't do it in case he got bullied.
He carried on anyway, and told the judges that when he performed, it let him 'escape from eveything'
Another well performed act, and one of the judges told him that dreams should never be put down.
Believe me, and you know me well enough by now, I think with a *passion* that if you have something you think you should do in life, something you've always considered 'for other people' and not for you - please, please, and please again, act on it.
Follow your dream, live your passion - it's worth it, it doesn't have to be in entertainment, but this show is as good a black and white example as you can get of what's possible.
It's an important pillar in my life, I love watching it on TV, and I also love acting on it in real life (what's that? when's my new book out?)
Ok, that's it for this week, do you have any lurking passions?
'Til Next Time.
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 418 - What Will You Be Putting Off This Week?
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
You may have noticed (although I accept that you also may *not* have noticed!) that for the last 2 weeks there wasn't a newsletter.
As it happens, my laptop decided to stop working.
I took it in to a shop, and they said it needed a new hard drive, and would be done in 4-5 days.
That was on a Monday so I didn't do a newsletter then, thinking I'd be back on it the following week.
4 days came and went, 5 days came and went, 6 days came and went...you get the picture.
I rang up and the man told me he couldn't be sure if it was done or not as the engineers weren't there.
I rang again the next day to be told it was being worked on.
I rang again the next day to be told it was still being worked on.
I told them that the 4-5 days had now been 9 days already, and could they call me back in 2 hours with an update about what was happening.
That went down like a cup of cold sick, but the grudgingly agreed.
2 hours later the phone rang - 'Your laptop's all done and ready.'
Coincidence?
Possibly, otherwise someone wouldn't have invented the word 'coincidence', but in this case I don't think so.
I suspect that they wait until the customer starts chasing and only then pull their finger out to get the work done.
That attitude towards the customer doesn't even come as a surprise either, that's the worse thing about it.
Ok, today I want to talk about procrastination.
I was going to talk about it a while ago, but didn't get round to it...
Backing up your pc data is a classic example - my recent laptop woes are not unusual, rather they are inevtiable, and if you put off your backing up, then you'd better be prepared to lose all your data, which is no joke.
As it happens, I had been good with my backing up, so had my data saved.
I can suffer from procrastination badly.
Because I live and work on my own, I don't have anyone to nag, er, remind me to do things, so if I can't be bothered to do something and it isn't essential, it occasionally won't get done.
At one of the local jam nights there is a barmaid who looks just like HeidieMarie Stefanyshyn-Piper.
'Er, who?' you may ask- the barmaid certainly did.
I told her she was an astronaut, and was currently living deep underwater for 10 days as part of a NASA space habitat development.
I kept telling her I would bring in a picture, but since the jam session is every 2 weeks, I never had any rush to do it.
Then the 2 weeks would be up and I hadn't done it, so I 'd think 'I'll do it for next time.'
Eventually I managed to get a picture printed, but when I took it in, the pub had new owners, and the barmaid wasn't there!
I was cursing my procrastination - it had purely and simply caused me to miss showing her who I was talking about.
Luckily for me it turns out she was just having a day off that day, and will be back, so I can show her - I may get a slap in the face, I may get a kiss, I may get a punch from her boyfriend, but by jimminy she'll know who I mean!
Before I go, someone sent me a video the other day, and it may be the cutest I've seen, only 15 seconds.
You may have seen it before, but if you haven't, I challenge you only watch it once - I would put my mortgage on you watching it again.
http://www.gordonbryan.com/panda
Also, I'm working on a new $7 project, so let me ask if this would interest you - you buy the guide for $1, and I then pay you $7 - does that sound like a deal?
Right, that's it for this week, remember that procrastination can be easy to succumb to - is there anything you know you should just get done?
Let's make a pact that by next week's newsletter it will be done!
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 417 - Is This British Woman A Result Of U.S. Dominance?
Hi,
I hope everything is ok where you are.
I went to see a football game yeserday.
In the stadium about 20 minutes away from me, the England Women were playing.
It was fascinating, and I could see a lot of parallels between the state of women's football in this country, and the state of curling here too.
The English beat Northern Ireland 4-0 in front of just under 4,000 fans.
Not bad attendance that.
Plenty of food for newsletter material there, and I will undoubtedly come back to the fact that a lot of our players still have other jobs to hold down!
Today though I want to tie in the game yesterday with an article I wrote recently, so here it is...
************************************************
Is This British Woman The Result Of U.S. Dominance?
************************************************
The British woman? Jacqui Oatley.
The sport? Football.
The date? April 21st 2007.
The main highlights show for the British national game of football had a first in its' 43 year history in April 2007 - the first commentary by a woman.
The decision was criticised in many quarters, but not from me, I think she did a good job.
Like most new male commentators, she worked her way up the ranks after studying journalism, and she also has experience of playing the game, being a keen player until she dislocated a kneecap and ruptured tendons.
That's the focus of this article, the fact that she played football.
Womens' football in this country was always viewed as a novelty, in fact it was banned on our grounds until only a few years ago.
To be honest, it's still treated here as 'the girls having a go', although that is very slowly changing.
This has been driven by the US, where the womens' game has been popular for a long time at school level, with the senior national team achieving World Cup success.
The market in the US for the mens' game has been famously resistant for the last 30 years at least, and I'm convinced it was the growth of the womens' game that prompted the growth in that market of the mens' game.
Football is the biggest growing game in the US at junior level, and the money men have not been slow to recognise the potential when all those players grow up!
Several of the top teams in England have been bought out by US interests, most noticeably Manchester United.
Both of the teams in Jacqui Oatley's first game fielded US players.
Good luck to her, I say.
The decision to use a female commentator for our flagship football programme is long overdue, and I suspect it was helped by the growing popularity of the game with women here.
She also got there, by hard work, passion and determination.
Was she ultimately helped by the money driving the sport in the US and the womens' game there?
Possibly, but she's also there on skill at what she does.
***********************************************************
There you go.
I've also been playing around with youtube videos for the first time.
You don't have to be super polished to post videos, here's a test version of mine, which you can see was knocked up in my kitchen:

Issue 416 - Frankly My Dear I Don't Give...Hey, Can You Smell Burning?
I am in the process of moving autoresponders, so to continue receiving the newsletter in your inbox, please send a blank email to: thegreatgordino@getresponse.com
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well as we crack into May.
I'm not going to write about sport today.
I want to, today here in the UK sees the FA Womens' Cup Final, and the finish of one of the longest individual World Championships in sport.
I'm restraining myself, although I can tell you I will be using both of those events with my Make Money From Sport technique! (how's that for a not-so-subtle hint!)
http://www.gordonbryan.com/sport
Ok, today I'll go for another subject I enjoy, and also use to profit from online, the movies.
It's an article I wrote about goal achievement, so here it is...
******************************************************
Frankly My Dear I Don't Give....Hey, Can You Smell Burning?
******************************************************
It's a well known Hollywood story - that the unknown Vivien Leigh just marched up to the producer of Gone With The Wind with a raging fire in the background, and announced that she would be playing the part of Scarlett O'Hara.
So, is it true?
Er, well sort of.
On the night of Dec 10th 1938, shooting was taking place of the burning of Atlanta scene.
Incidentally the raging fire in the background of the scene is the actual burning of the arch from the original King Kong movie.
So, the producer was there, David O. Selznick, who after a massive national publicity rich search to find someone to play Scarlett O'Hara in the film, still hadn't cast the role.
Vivien Leigh didn't exactly just march up unannounced - she was there accompanied by her agent, who happened to be Selznick's brother.
Myron Selznick also happened to be the agent of Leigh's fling and future husband, a certain Laurence Olivier!
David Selznick knew who she was, but it was indeed apparently on seeing her in the flesh that he was swayed.
Maybe it was the red glow of fire all around, but apparently she did a little audition that night, test shots were taken swiftly following, and within a month, Vivien Leigh had signed the dotted line and the deal was done.
It was a controversial choice - it had been widely assumed that the role would be given to a woman from the South, considering that's the whole axis of the story, and at the very least an American actress!
Can you imagine the hoo-ha when it was given to this British upstart!
Actually it might have been a smart move, because a famous American actress might have taken attention away from the actual story.
It can't be said that Leigh did a bad job, she did win the Oscar for best actress for the role after all!
Vivien Leigh only made less than 20 films in her career, and along with her Oscar for 'A Streetcar Named Desire' it is her performance as Scarlett that immortalised her.
Goal achievement wise it's a great story.
Let's face it, to succeed in acting is one of the hardest things to do, and she certainly caused a stir after that firey night in December '38.
Was she lucky?
I guess you could say that, but had she created her luck?
Yes.
She didn't get to have Selznick's brother as an agent by accident, that didn't happen with her sitting at home wishing.
She took action, she pursued her goals.
Of course so did all the other women who wanted the role, not least the thousands of Southern Belles that auditioned.
Taking action doesn't always guarantee results, but not taking action *will* guarantee failure!
************************************************
Ok, that's it for this week - I've said it before, and I'll say it again, with good reason as it's a vital ingredient of goal achievement - are you ideas and plans backed up with action?
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 415 - What's My Next Challenge?
Don't forget, back issues can be read at my blog http://thegreatgordino.blogspot.com
I am in the process of moving autoresponders, so to continue receiving the newsletter in your inbox, please send a blank email to: thegreatgordino@getresponse.com
Hi,
I hope everything is ok where you are.
Thank-you for all your kind words following my marathon last week.
I always enjoy getting your feedback, so don't hesitate to contact me anytime you want!
2 people I met online both mentioned me in their blogs
Funnily enough they both live within 40 miles of me - it's a small world!
Martin Avis is someone I mention often.
His writing style and outlook seem to fit mine more often than not, the main difference being that he lives with 3 daughters and a wife, whereas I have to look deep into mists of time for a feminine presence in my life..!
His blog can be seen at: http://www.kickstartarchive.com
The other local chap is not someone I've mentioned, but today his site has more interest to me than Martin's (sorry Martin, but you'll see why!)
His name's Paul Gent, and he's often been in touch with me about how to do various things, and has been a victim of that common affliction, read-a-lot-but-dont-take-action-itis!
Well he has now taken the plunge, and taken action!
He keeps asking me about things, as he does Martin, and you can see his new blog at:
http://everydaysuccesstips.blogspot.com
When you look at this site, rememeber this is someone who never got round to taking action, but has now made that jump - there is *no* reason why you can' too!
I mentioned last week that I was in need of a new challenge, now that the marathon is out of the way.
I'm still pondering whether to stand for Parliament again.
Last time I did on the spur of the moment, and only ran a 4 week campaign.
Even though I came a solid 5th, I wouldn't do it again unless I was intending to win.
I think a 2 year campaign could make it possible, and fairly regularly I get inspired to do it, not least because of a recent incident.
When Tony Blair came to power 10 years ago, he said that sleaze would not be tolerated, that government needed to be whiter than white, open and transparent.
One much trumpeted result of this was the passing of the Freedom of Information Act.
Sounds good doesn't it, with the public that elects the government being allowed access to how it's run.
Well a couple of weeks ago, another bill came before the House of Commons, to make MPs *exempt* from the Freedom of Info Act, particularly when it comes to how they spend their massive expenses!
What??
I've never heard such rubbish in all my life, and out of around 650 MPs, only 6 spoke against it.
At the moment, it looks like it won't be law, but that's only on technicalities, not thanks to the MPs!
If my MP was truly reflecting the views of his constituents, I bet I can guarantee they wouldn't back the law, but he votes to support it - so how is he representing them?
You see, I'm off on a rant again, so that would be a worthy goal for me to set.
I heard from Steve who suggested I walk the Great Wall of China.
Thats' not something I'd considered, but it's on the list now of 'why nots'
Rebecca made a load of suggestions, one of them being 'get married.'
What, again!?
It was enough of a challenge the first sodding time.
Easier just to find someone I don't like and buy them a house...
Rebecca knows I like to poke fun, so when she also put 'cabinetry' on the list, I took great joy in emailing her to ask if she actually meant 'cabinet making' or even 'carpentry'. No answer as yet to that...
I got a suggestion from Liz, who reminded me of the old idea of finding a penny, then doubling it 28 times to get to a million.
You are supposed to find the first penny, them start the doubling process by just asking until people tell you to go away!
I could set the target of doubling every month, which should be a 2 year goal.
It's not a bad idea - the idea itself is not new, but who has actually ever tried to see it through?
Then there is the curling.
I've read and heard that an Olympic Gold is worth a million if handled propery.
Well I could set mysef the goal of Olympic Gold by the 2014 Oympics, and see if I can get a million from my progress.
If I found a bookmaker willing to offer me odds of 1000-1, I could bet £1000 and that would be a million!
Hmm, lots of ideas, please let me know what you think of them, and give me any more that you might have, bearing in mind that once I decide on one, it *will* get done!
I'll close this week with 2 quickies.
Firstly, 3 articles I had published yesterday, which may or may not appear in future issues:
Is This British Woman The Result Of U.S. Dominance?
Is This The Luckiest Man In Sport?
36,000 Reasons To Benefit From Sport
Secondly, did you see the other day when Stephen Hawking was able to be free of his wheelchair and do 180 degree flips while on a zero gravity plane?
Remember the wealth of abundance around us, particularly when you move your arms and legs - not everyone can take that for granted.
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
No sudden movements from me today, as I did my marathon yesterday.
Last Monday Suni Williams did the Boston Marathon while she was strapped to a treadmill aboard the International Space Station.
She clocked a time of 4 hours 23, very impressive.
I set off yesterday at 9am in the more mundane gravity of Earth.
The London Marathon, which I hadn't got a place in, started at the same time, all 36,000 of them.
It was extremely hot, one of the hottest days for the race, not ideal for running by a long shot!
In fact last week the Rotterdam Marathon was cancelled due to heat concerns.
I started at my target 5 miles per hour pace, and got all the way to 18 miles in 3 hours 36 with really no problems at all.
It was more comfortable than training runs, because when it starts to hurt during the training, you know it's just that, training, with nothing at the end.
At least this time I knew it was the real thing.
Then at 18 miles my dubious groin made an appearance.
I carried on and got to 20 miles in 4 hours 2, just a gnat's knacker outside my target.
However, something you get from a year's training is knowledge about what happens when things go wrong as well as right, and I knew that my groin couldn't take another 6 miles like that without risk of a serious twang.
So I slowed my pace, because I *knew* I would get to the finish, and wanted to get there as best I could.
Also, with the heat, the fact that I had no medical support was not something to ignore.
I crossed the line after 26.2 miles in 5 hours 45 minutes.
My target time had been around 5 hours 30, so I can't complain at that.
I had taken extra water supplies, meaning that when I passed my car at the side of the road every 3 miles, I could grab a new bottle, and the extra supplies meant I didn't have to make it last, so when I came round to my car again, I could use any excess in the bottle to pour over myself.
I've got aching muscles today, no surprise there, but the only real adverse effect is ferocious sunburn.
I had laughed loudly to myself as I passed 3 local women with their pushchairs, as they were all bright pink.
However, it suddenly dawned on me that I was in the same sun...
I now have a huge vest mark in pink and white - still cheaper than a tattoo I guess.
So will I do a marathon again?
Well I can definitely say it would have to be in the race proper if I did.
I'm not one of life's endurance athletes, after all my 5 hours 45 is a little way off the freak show world record of 2 hours 4.
No, I did it as a challenge to myself.
I set it to mark me hitting the Big 4-0, to remind myself that I could achieve huge things if I set out to do them.
The marathon is a classic in the world of achievement, so I can now tick it off my list.
I'm not the first or last person to do it, after all, there have so far been well over 35,000 finishers from yesterday alone!
It was hard though, hard enough for me to want to stop on many occasions - after all, it wouldn't matter if I didn't achieve it, would it?
Well it would matter to me, and part of the formula for being a goal achiever is to constantly remind yourself, *in the real world*, that you can and do achieve goals you set yourself.
They may be small goals, it doesn't have to be a marathon, but you do need to get into the habit of setting and then going about achieving goals.
There was lots of free information online about how a first timer should train for a marathon, right down to the details of what to eat and drink and when in the 3 hours before the race.
If you have a goal, don't tell yourself you haven't done it because it's hard.
Don't tell yourself you haven't done it because you don't know how.
The information is out there, the support is out there.
Tell yourself that you will get it done!
I'm feeling chuffed with myself today I must admit.
It was a big achievement for me, and as I said a reminder to myself of what I can achieve when I decide to!
Hopefully you can take some inspiration from it, and apply it to something in your life, that has maybe been simmering in the back of your mind?
Also, if anyone has any ideas about what challenge I should take up next, feel free to let me hear them!
Ok, that's it for this week - do you have a goal equivalent to a marathon in your life?
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Ok, that's it for this week - do you have a goal equivalent to a marathon in your life?
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 413 - The Great Gordino Marathon Is This Week!
I am in the process of moving autoresponders, so to continue receiving the newsletter in your inbox, please send a blank email to: thegreatgordino@getresponse.com
Hi,
I hope everything is well where you are.
Today's issue has a bit of a marathon twang to it, combined with an old article I wrote called 'Do You Listen To Unasked For Advice?'
My marathon is coming up this week, on Sun 22nd.
Wish me luck.
Although to be honest I don't need it.
I started training for this the day after last year's race.
I followed a 6 month training schedule, on the basis that this would allow me to take time off if needed.
As it happened I did need to, with a tweaked groin.
I'm still thinking that the groin was due to my peculiar leg movements while playing my heavy see-through-purple-plastic bass guitar.
Things like that aren't covered in my training programme, so to give myself extra time to allow for the unknown was a sensible thing to do.
The weather here at the moment is very hot.
If it's this hot on Sunday I will certainly know about it, so you won't hear me complaining if it's cold or pouring with rain!
Another marathon taking place this week, today in fact, is the Boston Marathon.
It's been going well over 100 years, and today it can claim a first - it is being run in space.
Sunita Williams, NASA astronaut on board the International Space Station, qualified to run the Boston race when she clocked 3 hours 29 in the Houston race.
Being in space is not going to stop her, so her race bib has been sent up to the station, and she will run the race strapped to a treadmill.
That's impressive.
I'll update you next week on how she gets on, when I can also update you on how I got on.
Ok, here's the bit about unasked for advice.
2 women have recently given me unasked for advice.
Often when women give me advice, it's a snappy 2 word effort, with the second word being 'off.'
This time however, there were actual sentences involved, so I'll pass them on.
One of them, Rebecca, told me that she had been going through my archived newsletters, and found that some of the links were to non-existent pages.
She said she was intrigued by some of the titles, and hoped I didn't mind her pointing in out, particularly since one of those unavailable archives was called 'Do You Listen To Unasked For Advice?'
The other advice came from Liz, who asked me what happened to the places given to people in the marathon who have to drop out through injury or other reasons.
I told her I had not known of any mechanism to give those places to people like me who had lost out in the ballot for places.
As I considered the point, I told her that if someone didn't get a place in the race, they were unlikely to have trained to do a marathon on the day, so it made sense not to offer the places out.
However, Liz then pointed out that I *had* trained for that day, as strange as it may seem, so wasn't it worth ringing them up to ask?
What a superb idea!
I did ring them, and got through to a veritable maze of automatic messages, all read out by a girl with a decidedly common accent, so no joy.
I'm not surprised - during this last week before the race, the organisers will have thousands upon thousands of people to deal with, without worrying about loonies like me ringing up and saying 'but I've kept up my training, honest!!'
So, do I listen to unasked for advice?
Always!
Listening to advice is not the same as acting on it.
Sometimes you might listen to advice and realise right away that it is useless.
However, as I found out again recently in the last few days, you might get some absolute gems!
Ok, the marathon tip didn't work out, but it only took one phone call.
So I'm back to doing the race on my own.
I like that aspect of the challenge.
It makes it hard because I have no-one to talk to, or to gee me along.
When I get bored, (and I can tell you I do!) I have to rely on myself for motivation, I have to concentrate to not let my mind concentrate on the aches and pains.
I for one can't listen to music when I run, because I tend to adjust my pace to the song, so it all goes pear shaped if I'm listening to Motorhead or AC/DC!
Various people have asked me what I do about water.
Some websites suggest I go round in advance and stash bottles of water in bushes!
I don't want to sound like I'm obsessed with dog wee, but come on!
When you've done 15 miles, and your water bottle is empty, the *last* thing you want is to pull a bottle out of a bush and wrap your lips around a bottle covered with something a local dog has deposited!
No, here's what I do.
I park my car along the 3 mile lap that I cover many times.
I carry my keys with me.
As I go past the car, I whip out the new bottle, chuck in the old, and I'm on my way.
It's probably no slower than trying to get a bottle at a drinks station with thousands of other people.
My target time?
5 hours 30, although with my dubious groin, anything under 6 hours will be fine.
I've got myself a little medal made to present myself afterwards.
I'm looking forward to it.
I'll be thinking of the original marathoner, he did the whole thing on his own too, the main differences being that he didn't have a car with water parked enroute, nor nicely designed running shoes.
He also collapsed and died afterwards, something else I'm not planning to copy!
Ok, that's it for this week - think of Suni Williams as she runs the Bostom Marathon in space today, and think of me as I do the first (and very possibly only) Great Gordino Marathon next Sunday.
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 412 - Are You An Old Dog? Or Can You Learn New Tricks?
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
You may remember that last week I wrote about my concerns about a youghurt flavour of 'strawberry and wild strawberry', my main concern being that the wild ones might have had dog wee on them.
Well I must have been having a particularly strange day, because before I knew it I had actually emailed them to ask the difference.
I got this reply - 'the wild variety is smaller with a more intense flavour.'
Hmm....
Talk about strange days, did anyone else see Tiger Woods smash his golf club against a tree?
He was as stressed as anyone had seen him, and he played the most bizarre shot around a tree which had the inevitable outcome of breaking his club and could have easily broken his wrist - not so clever when your hands bring you $50 million...
I've been watching a great series on TV, which reminds me of a great goal acheivement and self improvement subject - learning as an adult.
In the series, various celebrities try to learn a new instrument, with a live performance at the end.
Last week had a comedian learning the banjo, a notoriously difficult instrument to learn by all accounts.
He went along to his lessons, and his teacher wanted him to progress by learning specific songs, the theory being that the technique would come as a by-product.
Now it depends on the circumstance, sometimes that approach can work, and sometimes it can backfire, but the comedian stuck at it.
Eventually he decided it wasn't working for him, and changed teachers, to someone who taught him technique first, songs second.
This worked much better for him, and he saw his progress move forward.
I can remember writing in the past about a show along similar lines, that had celebrities learning to paint, and was surprised that one in particular, a journalist, was so closed minded about the techniques, simply because it wasn't what he had expected. He was sarcastic and dismissive pretty much from the outset.
He'd decided the technique wouldn't work so guess what - it didn't!
The comedian in this series did much better - he was open minded about the technique, and *tried* it.
It was only after he had tried it that he made the decision to try something else to see which worked better for him.
Now *that's* the way to do it!
Try things before you dismiss them - you may be amazed!
Speaking of music, it brings me nicely to my new guide.
It's about making money from music, and I called it, er, 'Make Money From Music.'
As with the big trend in internet marketing this year, it's priced at just $7, so if you fancy a pee, it's at:
http://www.gordonbryan.com/music
Ok, that's it for this week, think of astronaut Suni Williams.
On the 11th, up in space on the International Space Station, she'll be running a marathon, strapped onto a treadmill - impressive!
It's a short issue this week, but it's a valuable tip - what lessons, ideas, or tips have you dismissed without even trying them?
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 411 - Oi! Is That Dog Wee On My Strawberries?
I am in the process of moving autoresponders, so to continue receiving the newsletter in your inbox, please send a blank email to: thegreatgordino@getresponse.com
Hi,
I hope everything is well where you are as we lurch into April - I swear I only blinked since New Year and we're here already!
I couldn't decide what to call this week's issue.
I have 2 alternatives.
The first one is 'Oi, Is That Dog Wee On My Strawberries?'
The second is 'Rebecca Rows to Cycling Celebration.'
After much deliberation (a cup of tea's worth) I have decided to go with both!
Right here goes...
'Oi, Is That Dog Wee On My Strawberries?'
I bought myself some healthy youghurt last week.
Only 0.1% fat - not bad.
Normally when you see that, there is a massive amount of sugar, but I checked, and it was only 6%.
Good so far.
4 flavours -
Cherry - nice.
Strawberry - nice.
Rasberry - nice
Strawberry and Wild Strawberry - er, hang on...
'Strawberry and Wild Strawberry?'
How does that work then?
Come on, you're not telling me that someone goes out to the nearest bush and picks wild strawberries?
They could have dog wee on them!
Let's be honest, the wild strawberry pickers will be on minimum wage, and will probably get their 'wild strawberries' from rummaging through the bins round the back of Tesco's!
The youghurt tub says it contains 1% strawberry and 0.5% wild strawberry, and I'm sure if I write to Mr.Youghurt he will tell me there is a distinct difference in taste between the two.
I *bet* there is - dog wee!
The youghurt contains 'real fruit pieces.'
I'm telling you, when I see a lump of fruit from that pot, the sucker's getting a good rinse under the tap before it gets in *my* mouth!
All in all I'm not altogether sure what that little tale has got to do with self improvement, goal achievement or wealth creation, so let's crack on with...
'Rebecca Rows to Cycling Celebration.'
A bit heavy on the alliteration maybe, but as you know I can't resist it - the allure of alliteration.
See, I'm at it again.
Ok, Rebecca Romero.
She won a silver medal at the Athens Olympics for Britain in rowing, but got disillusioned with the management of the sport in this country (you're not alone there girl.)
So, she took up cycling, and it's been less than a year since she first made a self-admitted 'wobble' around a cycling track.
At the weekend, she took silver in the World Championships!
How impressive is that!!
Very.
She's now in the shake up for next years' Olympics.
Not many people achieve Olympic medals in 2 different events, and it's usually a runner doing something like bobsleigh, if at all.
In fact if she does it, she'll only be the 2nd woman to do it at 2 different summer Olympic sports.
Yes, rowing and cycling both need thunderous thighs, but apart from that they are very different.
I'm amazed at what she's done in a year, and after I write my letter to Mr. Youghurt, I may well be writing to Rebecca as well.
Maybe I could ask to measure her thighs.
Do you think she set a goal to get that far?
You bet.
Do you think she set about the task by taking action?
You bet.
I'm inspired - hope you are too.
Ok, that's it for today - in 12 months will your achievements be as spectacular as Rebecca Romero's?
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Issue 410 - The Great Global Warming Swindle - Or Is It?
I am in the process of moving autoresponders, so to continue receiving the newsletter in your inbox, please send a blank email to: thegreatgordino@getresponse.com
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
I saw a tv programme last week, which tied in to another programme I had seen, and both tie in nicely with a vital theory I use for self improvement and goal achievement.
The programme last week was 'Dragon's Den.'
I've mentioned it before, it's where businesses make a pitch for investment to 5 mutli-millionaires
Last week there was a first, as all 5 investors decided to invest.
The invention was a product which cut down the amount of power used when electrical equipment is left on 'standby.'
The inventors have a patent pending, and the millionaires were hooked by the thought of embedding the device in new televisions.
When the inventor stated how the reduction would help reduce global warming due to CO2 emissions, all the millionaires nodded in agreement.
After all, we all know that's true, right?
Cue the tie in with the other programme, called 'The Great Global Warming Swindle.'
This was a documentary which left me gawping at the screen.
The basic premise was that global warming due to man-made CO2 has been blown out of all proportions, and since it's now an industry worth billions and billions, the myth will be perpetuated.
The film had scientists, who said that the theory that CO2 was a temperature driver was simply not true, in fact the global temperature drives the amount CO2.
The percentage of CO2 made by man is tiny compared to that made by animals, decaying leaves and the biggest producer on the planet, the oceans.
Differing levels of solar activity mean different levels of solar wind reaching the atmosphere.
Differing levels of solar wind mean differeing levels of cloud over the oceans.
Differing levels of clouds means different ocean temperatures, and differing levels of ocean temperatures
mean different global temperatures and CO2 produced by the oceans.
The film argued that this has been going on for hundreds of years.
If the evidence is not there to support the man-made CO2 fears, in fact if the evidence shows otherwise, then why is the myth kept going?
Money.
I don't know about you, but this theory struck me as something worth investigating, so I hopped online to do some research.
Here's where it gets interesting.
I had not heard of the film maker, Martin Durkin, but I soon found that he has a 'colourful' reputation.
He has had programmes turned down because he is said to have ignored huge amounts of counter arguments.
One of his films was criticised by the Independent Television Commission, stating that he had misled the interviewees about the purpose of the programme, and had creatively and selectively edited their interviews.
That was a huge disappointment to me, as it casts a shadow immediately over his global warming programme.
However, and this is the point I want to make, does the fact that he has a doubtful reputation mean that his claims are necessarily false?
No, it doesn't.
What it does mean, is that there is a need for independent thought.
Just because someone tells you something is so, there is nothing wrong in questioning it, asking why they say it, and doing your own research.
Yes, use other views to make your own opinion, but make sure that's what you end up with, your own opinion, and when someone asks you why you think it, be able to tell them, and not just say 'because someone else said so.'
The programme has been big news since it was shown, and I'll be interested to see what happens.
Ok, that's it for today, what's your independent thought on CO2, or what's your independent thought on whether you can achieve your goals - if someone tells you that you can't, does that necessarily make them right?
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon

Hi,
I hope everything is ok where you are.
I had today's issue planned out, but my weekend made for a tale worth telling, so I've put a link to the other article at the bottom if you want to read that before I use it.
My weekend didn't start too well.
I was all looking forward to a 2 day curling tournament, my first proper competition seeing as I had to pull out of the last one with a migraine.
I got about 10 miles down the road, and a tyre decided to disintegrate on my car.
I was driving along at 60 when I heard a loud 'JUDDER JUDDER, THWACK!'
I looked in the rearview mirror to see lots of small black bits in my wake.
Now I'm not a car person, and my usual instinct is to just ignore any unusual noise and hope it will go away, but even I knew that I should stop.
I got out and saw the tyre in a state that could best be described as 'buggered.'
I wondered if the curling fates were against me as I cursed to myself.
I had no choice but to call the breakdown service.
Fortunately they are top notch, and arrived 15 minutes after I called.
Another 15 minutes, and I was back on my way!
That is seriously impressive service, and worth every penny I pay for it.
So, I got to the curling in time, to start the tournament with 3 players I had either only played with once, not at all, or never even met.
You may remember a couple of weeks ago I wrote about 'A Great Pair Of Tips!' saying how you can make huge leaps forward by just concentrating on a couple of simple effective basic skills in any walk of life, and that the same had applied to my curling.
Well I was able to use those tips again, and by the end of day 1 we were in a good position.
Yesterday I was actually entertaining thoughts of winning, and took a massively positive attitude.
It was a hugely competitive day of 2 matches which went back and forth in momentum the whole time, ending in 2 draws.
At the end of the competition, my team had won!
I was amazed!
I'm not sure I've ever won anything at sport, and this is a proper competition!
There is a lovely curling trophy dating back 50 years, and has the winner's names engraved on it, so whatever else I achieve in curling, I am recorded for posterity!
Wow, what a thrill!
And in a sport which is so polite, winners and losers having a laugh and a drink afterwards.
I'm basking in a warm glow today.
It's not a smug glow, I'm realistic to know that my playing was good enough to simply give the rest of the team something to work with, but I still played a worthy part.
No, my glow is an achievement glow.
In my first full season, I had decided to learn and improve.
I took the steps required, and put in the effort.
Now, near enough a calendar year after I started curling, I have a permanent achievement which can't be taken away.
In any walk of my life or yours, that will give you a glowing feeling that is unrivalled, I assure you.
In fact, someone asked me yesterday 'Is winning better than sex?
I replied that I couldn't remember.
They said 'You only won 10 minutes ago!'
I said 'I know, but that's not what I'm having trouble remembering...'
Here's another thing - you may or not believe in universal abundance, things coming around that go around, but this week, myself and another of my weekend team mates launched a forum for English curling - something we decided to do just to help the game and people interested in it.
Maybe our victory was curling karma??
Ok, that's it for today - here's the link to the other article -

Issue 408 - Eeow! I'm A Good Girl I Am!
Hi,
I hope Monday finds you well.
I was all set for this week's issue, calling it 'Eeow! I'm A Good Girl I am!' and then I saw a great documentary last week called 'The Great Global Warming Swindle'.
Throw in an article I wrote called 'What's The Difference Between 3 Miles And 26 Miles?' and I have 3 different subjects to talk about -
- The problems that are out of your hands on your road to achievement.
- The importance of independent thought.
- The enormous power of your mindset.
I know I could talk about all 3, but I like to keep the newsletter at the same bite-sizish length, so let me just have a quick go at eeny meeny miny mo...
Ok, decision made, (after a best of 5 tournament) -
*******************************************
Eeow! I'm A Good Girl, I Am!'
When I wrote my article 'Move Your Bloomin' Arse!' about the goal achievement nuggets to be found in the film 'My Fair Lady', I had some emails saying they wanted more.
This time, although the title is another phrase uttered by the character Eliza Doolittle, (in a dubious cockney accent it must be said), I want to concentrate on the goal achievement points behind the starring of the actress who played her, Audrey Hepburn.
When the film was first mooted, it was widely thought that the Briton Julie Andrews would play Eliza.
She had played the role in the theatre to rave reviews alongside Rex Harrison, so it was assumed she would be in the film with Harrison too.
Jack Warner from Warner Bros. wanted a bigger box office name, and would not budge from Hepburn.
Can you imagine how it must have felt when early in recording it became clear that Hepburn would not be able to cope with the vocals, and they had to be overdubbed by someone else!
D'oh!
It was Marni Nixon who did the singing, uncredited, something which was not unusual in Hollywood then.
The casting controversy reflected badly on Hepburn, although it was undoubtedly out of her hands.
In fact, the decision to not cast Andrews was taken before Hepburn was cast.
Although the film won 8 Oscars, including best picture and best actor, poor old Audrey wasn't even nominated!
That kind of thing always tarnishes the Oscars for me.
How is it that the film can be so showered with awards, and yet the leading lady was so bad so as not even to get mentioned?
Just a touch political, perhaps, maybe!!
Audrey Hepburn was definitely one of life's goal achievers, helping the underground resistance in Holland during the war, making herself one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and working as a Unicef goodwill ambassador in later life.
Did she have trouble and strife along the way?
Yes!
Did she still carry on?
Yes, of course she did.
Sometimes things are out of our control, like the whole My Fair Lady casting, but you need to stick with your goal and plough on through.
So, next time you hit a bump on the road to your goals, think of Audrey Hepburn shouting 'Eeow, I'm a good girl, I am', although if you're a man, maybe do it under your breath.
Hmm, thinking about it, maybe do it under your breath if you're a woman too!
Ok, that's it for today - can you speak cockney like Audrey Hepburn?
'Til next time,
Health and Happiness,
Gordon
